Makayla Walks Again

Makayla was born perfectly healthy on April 18, 2012. By 7 months old, she began standing up and cruising along the furniture to explore her surroundings. Around New Year’s 2012, she had a minor fall after which she was unable to stand and walk on her own. Tests confirmed this beautiful baby girl had Stage 4 Neuroblastoma.

The tumor was growing in her chest and spinal cord causing paralysis from her chest down. Her parents were told by multiple doctors and their neurologist that the damage to her spine might not be reversible…that their little girl may never walk again.Brave Makayla endured 12 rounds of chemotherapy, bone marrow biopsies, countless blood draws, shots, and blood transfusions.
This little fighter proved the doctors wrong and is not only walking again… she runs, hops, and dances to celebrate her victory! Unfortunately because the tumor is in her spine it cannot be surgically removed, so she’ll never be “cancer free.” But thankfully the tumor has been stable and she is considered in remission. Makayla continues living her “new normal” life as a fun, smart, and outgoing 4 year old that loves Disney princesses. She continues regular follow-ups to ensure she remains the happy, healthy princess she is!
