Keaton Raphael Memorial Announces 12TH Annual St. Baldrick’s Head Shaving Events Raising Funds for Childhood Cancer Research

Registration is now open for Keaton Raphael Memorial’s 12th Annual St. Baldrick’s Foundation Head Shaving Extravaganzas designed to raise funds, on a local and national level, to support childhood cancer research. In solidarity with children battling cancer “Heroes” get their heads shaved by Supercuts stylists in front of thousands, in return for pledges of financial support.

This year’s celebrations are scheduled to take place March 8 at deVere’s Irish Pub in Davis, deVere’s Irish Pub in Sacramento on March 12, and Westfield Galleria at Roseville on March 15. To sign up, as an individual or team, shavees can visit www.getbald.com

Why all the shaved heads?

  • Worldwide, a child is diagnosed every 3 minutes
  • In the U.S., more children die of childhood cancer than any other disease—more than AIDS, asthma, cystic fibrosis, congenital anomalies and diabetes combined.
  • Two-thirds of children treated for childhood cancer will suffer long-term effects from treatment including loss of hearing and sight, heart disease, secondary cancers, learning disabilities, infertility and more.
  • In the last 20 years, only two new drugs have been specifically developed to treat children with cancer and
  • Before they turn 20, about 1 in 300 boys and 1 in 333 girls will have cancer.

With less than 4% of the National Cancer Institute’s budget directed to childhood cancer research, Keaton Raphael Memorial’s St. Baldrick’s fundraising events are vital to continue saving lives against this devastating disease.

As one of the top 2013 St. Baldrick’s nationwide campaigns, Keaton Raphael Memorial events brought in almost $600,000 and shaved over 1,000 heads. Over the 11 years they have been able to raise over 4.7 million with over 1 million funding research at local UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center. This year KRM, Westfield Galleria, and deVere’s Irish Pubs are aiming for higher numbers and goals with a mission to get more and more shavees and team involved in the fight against childhood cancer.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Every 3 minutes, a family’s life is turned upside down when they hear the four devastating words, “Your child has cancer.” At Keaton’s Child Cancer Alliance, we believe that every child deserves a fighting chance – and you can help make that a reality.

This month, we honor brave young warriors, remember our precious Angels, and stand with families fighting childhood cancer today. From fundraising events to volunteer opportunities, there’s a way for everyone to join this mission of hope.

Together, let’s Glow Gold and remind every family: you are not alone in this journey. This September, we shine a light of awareness, love, and unwavering support for every child and family facing childhood cancer.
