Hope, Strength, and Healing for families coping with a child cancer diagnosis

Meet Amelia diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL)

Meet Amelia.  This sweet 5 years old Loves unicorns, LOL dolls, & playing with her siblings.

Amelia was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) at 4 years old. Her grandparents, Amelia’s legal guardians, were raising her and her three siblings when they received this devastating news. Her grandparents were all too familiar with cancer and its treatment as their very own son, Amelia’s uncle, was diagnosed with ALL in 2013 at the age of 16. He is now a cancer survivor and provides HOPE for his young niece and she undergoes treatment.

Both of Amelia’s grandparents have been unable to work and even began retirement early just to remain by her side throughout treatment. Their family was referred to KCCA for customized supportive services in May 2019. Since then, a financial grant was provided to help with immediate expenses such as rent and utilities. Also, they have received support with basic needs such as gas and food cards to help reduce the financial strain on their family. They had the relief of knowing that they would be able to provide healthy food options during their commutes and hospitalizations.

During the delivery of the family’s Hope Chest, family care package, Amelia’s grandparents shared how much it meant to see Amelia smiling and so excited to see her new surprises. Also, her siblings were so thankful to receive items as well. With the holiday season soon approaching, the family did not have the means to provide gifts for their children and were adopted through KCCA’s Holiday Adopt A Family. Amelia’s grandparents shed tears of joy filled with gratitude as they received this wonderful support during the holidays. They are forever grateful for the support that KCCA has provided their granddaughter and family throughout the years.
