More Than Plants: Creating Connection at KTA Terrarium Night

At Keaton’s Child Cancer Alliance, we know that support comes in many forms and sometimes, it looks like laughter, creativity, and a chance to simply be a teenager.

This spring, Keaton’s Teen Alliance (KTA) welcomed the season with a hands-on, joy-filled Terrarium Night. The room quickly came to life as teens gathered around tables filled with succulents, glass jars, colorful stones, and an array of fun accessories, each one ready to be transformed into something unique.

From the moment the activity began, creativity took over.

Teens carefully selected their plants, learning how to pot and care for their succulents while designing miniature worlds that reflected their personalities. Some created peaceful, nature inspired scenes, while others leaned into imagination, crafting tiny rivers, whimsical fairy gardens, and playful landscapes filled with character and charm.

No two terrariums were the same, and that was the beauty of it.

Beyond the plants and materials, what truly made the evening special was the space it created. A space where teens could relax, connect, and share time with others who understand the complexities of a childhood cancer journey, whether their own or that of a sibling.

There was laughter, conversation, and a sense of ease that can be hard to come by during challenging times.

These moments matter.

Through programs like Keaton’s Teen Alliance, we aim to provide more than just support; we create opportunities for connection, self-expression, and joy. Activities like Terrarium Night give teens a chance to step away from medical routines and daily stressors and focus instead on creating something beautiful, meaningful, and entirely their own.

It’s a reminder that healing isn’t just physical, it’s emotional, social, and deeply human.

As each teen left with their finished terrarium in hand, they carried more than just a new creation; they carried a memory, a connection, and a moment of joy.

This is what La misión de Keaton en movimiento looks like.

A Growing Community

What started as a simple idea, to create a space for connection, has turned into something truly special. Seeing families show up, open up, and support one another each time reminds me why this gathering matters so much.

Creating Comfort in a Time of Uncertainty

As this family navigates their child’s cancer diagnosis, the challenges they face are immense. Medical appointments, treatments, and the emotional weight of it all can be overwhelming. Having something as essential as a brand-new bed allows them to focus their energy where it matters most: supporting their child and caring for one another.
