During <\/span>\u0432 <\/span>w<\/span>eek <\/span>of July 17th<\/span>, 2023<\/span>, Yazmine <\/span>hadn’t<\/span> been herself.\u202f <\/span>She’d<\/span> been running fevers on and off and <\/span>wasn’t<\/span> eating.\u202f She had no energy and only wanted to sleep.\u202f<\/span><\/span><\/h5>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Then, on July 19th, her dad’s birthday, we decided that I would take her to the ER for a quick check up and be back in time to make a birthday dinner. Little did we know everything would change on that day.\u202f\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Up until this point, Yazmine had a pretty normal life of an average 3-year-old.\u202f She was almost like a little superhuman.\u202f She had never been sick, never been to the hospital, and we never had any concerns or worries about her at all.\u202f On a regular day, she and her baby brother would spend their days together while their older sister went to school, and from the time she woke up until she went to sleep, she was always eating. A BIG eater who enjoyed snacks and goodies, she would often say that she was \u201cstarving\u201d, and I\u2019d have to keep fruit on hand for her at all times. Her energy was also through the roof at times, so, that week before her diagnosis when she wasn\u2019t acting like herself, I knew that something was wrong.\u202f\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

When we made it to the ER, she was at the point where her temperature reached 103 degrees. Many tests were ran including blood work, urine tests, a chest x-ray, and a CT scan. At almost 1AM after spending hours at the ER, the Dr finally came in and said that she would have to be admitted due to her results showing a large mass near her kidney. They repeated the CT scan and confirmed that there were two large tumors on her left kidney, one tumor on her right kidney, and an additional small tumor located in her liver. After receiving those results, the Drs confirmed her diagnosis: Stage 4 Wilms Tumor.\u202f\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

During that first <\/span>w<\/span>ee<\/span>k<\/span> \u0438\u0437 <\/span>being admitted, we<\/span> were getting so much information thrown at us. The <\/span>social worker<\/span>\u202fat<\/span> Sutter Medical <\/span>Center gave<\/span> us the names of many organizations<\/span> who could help our family,<\/span> \u0430 \u0442\u0430\u043a\u0436\u0435 <\/span>Keaton’s<\/span> was one of them. <\/span>After being connected to Keaton\u2019s, the organization <\/span>\u0443\u043b.<\/span>ood<\/span> out right away <\/span>and we were shocked to learn from a Family Navigator that <\/span>they w<\/span>ere willing to <\/span>make a surprise drop off at our house<\/span>, sharing gifts for Yazmine and her siblings<\/span>. <\/span>The Family Navigators, <\/span>C<\/span>assie<\/span> and Emily<\/span>,<\/span> came<\/span> to our house and <\/span>shared <\/span>a wonderful welcome to <\/span>Keaton’s <\/span>organization. Ever since that point the organization has <\/span>truly <\/span>been a blessing. <\/span>From the fam<\/span>ily <\/span>\u0421\u043e\u0431\u044b\u0442\u0438\u044f<\/span>, <\/span>to\u202freceiving<\/span> \u0432 <\/span>support from a financial <\/span>grant, and even<\/span> receiving<\/span> the Princess hats\/wigs<\/span> from Keaton\u2019s, it all has meant so much to our family<\/span>. <\/span>Yazmine wears her yarn wigs<\/span> everyw<\/span>here she <\/span>goes and gets<\/span> so many compliments<\/span>, and our <\/span>whole family looks forward to the <\/span>Family Events that Keaton\u2019s hosts!<\/span> It is <\/span>al<\/span>so nice to <\/span>s<\/span>ee other families <\/span>that <\/span>we’ve<\/span> met during our many <\/span>hospital<\/span> stays and clinic visits<\/span> at these Family Events,<\/span> \u0430 \u0442\u0430\u043a\u0436\u0435 <\/span>I personally feel the care and compassion the<\/span> Keaton\u2019s team<\/span> shares with <\/span>al<\/span>l <\/span>\u0438\u0437<\/span> the families<\/span> they work with<\/span>. To us the biggest <\/span>blessing that was shared<\/span> through<\/span> \u041a\u0438\u0442\u043e\u043d\u0430<\/span> were the <\/span>Christmas gifts <\/span>given to our children <\/span>this past Christma<\/span>s.\u202f <\/span>Yazmine<\/span> unfortunately<\/span> was hospitalized <\/span>almost the<\/span> entire month of December<\/span>, and t<\/span>here was no time to squeeze in Christmas shopping or any planning <\/span>last year. I<\/span>t was hard to not let depression<\/span> \u0430 \u0442\u0430\u043a\u0436\u0435 <\/span>sadness overcome <\/span>us, b<\/span>ut <\/span>\u041a\u0438\u0442\u043e\u043d\u0430<\/span> helped give the kids a wonderful Christmas<\/span>, <\/span>and the <\/span>\u0433\u0440\u0443\u043f\u043f\u0430<\/span> that <\/span>sponsored our family<\/span> gave us such a blessing<\/span> that<\/span> allowed <\/span>us<\/span> to have <\/span>a<\/span> shining<\/span> moment <\/span>durin<\/span>g<\/span> a <\/span>very difficu<\/span>lt<\/span> \u0442<\/span>ime.\u202f\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Very recently, Yazmine had her Broviac removed. We have been slowly getting back to our normal life.\u202f You don’t realize how much you miss it until it’s gone. We don’t have to worry about low ANC counts, and we can go out and do more things. I can plan things with the kids and not have to worry about appointments or procedures. We get to all be together, and most importantly, the kids can all be together. There are no more weeklong separations. During treatment, your life is on hold, and during that time for our family, everything rightfully surrounded Yazmine and her care. At the same time, we did our best to juggle time for our other children and\u202fresponsibilities, because life doesn’t stop.\u202f\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

During the whole journey, and now at the end, Yazmine’s strength and faith remained strong. She surprisingly took every step so well, from the time when her hair started falling out, to when she had radiation for 12 long days, and despite all of her major surgeries she was just like, \u201cokay\u201d. She did it. No fighting, fear, or sadness. She just did what she had to do. I believe her strength kept us all going. Her accepting her diagnosis still shocks me. She truly gave our whole family strength when we needed it most.\u202f\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

My message for other families is that<\/span> it<\/span> does get better. Take <\/span>in the <\/span>joyful moments, <\/span>small accomplishments<\/span>, and the<\/span> small victories. <\/span>Don’t<\/span> be afraid to ask for help and be open to <\/span>accepting<\/span> \u0432\u0441\u0435 <\/span>the help <\/span>that’s<\/span> offered. This <\/span>can’t<\/span> be done <\/span>alone, it<\/span> takes an entire village<\/span>,<\/span> and special people like the ones at <\/span>Keaton’s<\/span>. <\/span>Our family could not have done this alone, and we are <\/span>truly grateful<\/span> \u0437\u0430 <\/span>\u0432\u0441\u0435<\/span> the love and support we received to help us overcome Yazmine\u2019s battle.<\/span> <\/span>\u00a0~ Anjelica, Yazmine, Child Cancer Warrior, Mother<\/em><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
