AC Crafters Holiday gifts - December 2006

Beverly Rodine, Sandy Anderson, Sue Gorman, Atie Blinn, Judy Hutchinson and Stephanie Hartman

On behalf of The Keaton Raphael Memorial, we would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the AC Crafters for the Holiday gifts that were made for children battling cancer and their siblings. Seventy age and gender specific books were purchased and wrapped in handmade holiday pillowcases and tied up with Santas bursting with candy! Stuffed animals and hats were also made to give to children that are going through cancer treatments. The gesture truly reflected the meaning of Christmas and helped to let childhood cancer families throughout northern Nevada know that they are not alone during this difficult time.

Adopt-A-Family 2006 - December 2006

For the second consecutive year, KRM directed an Adopt-A-Family Program that allowed the Northern Nevada community to help spread holiday cheer by sponsoring a family for the holidays. Twenty-five local child cancer families were matched with businesses, classrooms, deputies and youth groups. In total, these community “sponsors” donated over $20,000 in gifts to the families. Thank you to all that were involved!

As an extra holiday surprise for local childhood cancer families, KRM friend Stacey Cohen invited two families to attend The Nutcracker Ballet at the Pioneer Center on December 8, 2006. Nine year old Ashley was joined by her sister Jessica, 11, and parents, Don and Trisha. Two year old Daniel was joined by his sister Anne, 4, and mother Chantell. The group was escorted by KRM volunteers Breanna Roberts and Casey Strickland.

“The families were given VIP treatment and immediately welcomed with gifts and hugs from the wonderful Nutcracker staff and dancers,” said KRM staff Lizzie Dalton. “The children loved the ballet and were especially excited when they were invited backstage at intermission to mingle and receive autographs from many of the talented dancers.” Thank you to everyone at the Nutcracker that made this evening memorable for all!

The Lion’s Club Ice Cream Social and Antique Car Show - August 2006

KRM was invited to be one of four charities to host a booth at The Lion’s Club Inaugural Ice Cream Social and Antique Car Show during Hot August Nights in 2006. The three-day event was a success! KRM family navigator Lizzie Dalton and KRM board member Debbie Strickland ran the booth and met numerous people throughout the community that were interested and curious about the child cancer scene in northern Nevada. Many stories were shared and volunteer opportunities filled. Thank you Lion’s Club and we look forward to this year’s event!

2005 and 2006 Pacific Coast Cutting Horse Association

KRM developed a partnership with the Pacific Coast Cutting Horse Association (PCCHA) in August 2005. This relationship branded a new childhood cancer “educational component” to the PCCHA’s youth competition at their Reno Livestock Event.

At the 2005 and 2006 events, the Youth Committee rode on behalf of children battling cancer and each team name represented “the childhood cancer experience.” Team “HOPE” was riding for all childhood cancer survivors; Team “UNITED” was riding for all voices that speak for our children in our quest to find a cure; Team “COURAGE” was riding for all children still battling cancer; Team “HERO” was riding for all children who lost their battle in search for a cure; Team “STRENGTH” was riding for all parents of childhood cancer patients.  KRM displayed an informational booth at the week-long event and hosted a VIP reception for sponsors. Since 2005, the event has helped raise more than $50,000 in family support funds.

St. Baldrick’s 2006
KRM hosted its first local St. Baldrick’s Head-Shaving Celebration at the Stadium Sports and Fitness Club in 2006. The signature charity event drew hundreds of people and provided a fun St. Patrick’s Day celebration which raised $83,000 for childhood cancer research. This worldwide head-shaving event attracts willing participants to solicit pledges from everyone they know and shave their heads to show solidarity for children fighting cancer all over the world.

KRM would like to thank the 50 brave locals who collected pledges and shaved their heads at the event, as well as the following event sponsors for their tremendous contributions:

  • The Stadium Sports and Fitness Club
  • Genesis Salon and Medical Spa
  • The Barnes Home Team~ Ferrari and Lund
  • IGT
  • KRNV

Gold Ribbon Days 2006

In June 2006, KRM members Shirley Folkins-Roberts and Lizzie Dalton joined Robyn Raphael on Capitol Hill for the sixth annual Gold Ribbon Days. The nation’s most effective childhood cancer event was attended by survivors, patients, families, health professionals and advocates to urge congress to elevate childhood cancer to national public policy priority. More than 300 people from 31 states made 250 visits with members of Congress to share their stories and ask for support.

2006 "Chipping Away at Childhood Cancer" Memorial Golf Tournament

KRM hosted its second annual "Chipping Away at Childhood Cancer" Memorial Golf Tournament in the Reno community at Montreux Golf Country Club in September, 2006. The event raised more than $110,000 in family support funds!

The presentation of the $50,000 check to Children’s Hospital Oakland Pediatric Oncology Department at the tournament reception was our biggest accomplishment this year to fund a childhood cancer research project. Nearly 98% of northern Nevada children diagnosed with cancer are treated by Dr. Caroline Hastings from Children's Hospital Oakland. Currently, northern Nevada does not have a permanent pediatric oncologist or accredited pediatric oncology treatment program and the funds will directly benefit northern Nevada children.

Beads of Courage Family Night 2006

In September 2006, KRM hosted a creative and fun Beads of Courage Family Night Workshop at the Nevada Museum of Art for parents, siblings and kids going through the challenging experience of cancer diagnosis in the family. The workshop was an “Honoring Box Reflective Workshop” where participants reflected, remembered and responded with others while they created an Honoring Box that the children can use to collect their beads.

KRM sponsors the nationally recognized Beads of Courage Program at Renown Medical Center that allows the patients to document their cancer journey with beads that serve as tangible, visible symbols of the many procedures and treatments they experience.

Dream Dinners Open House 2006

Dream Dinners of South Reno and the Keaton Raphael Memorial hosted an Open House in September 2006 to make 70 meals donated by Dream Dinners for the families in our community that have a child with cancer. Some 25 guests gathered to assemble dinners and in just 90 minutes, 420 servings or 70 Dream Dinners were made!  KRM has set up an account at the Dream Dinners store in South Reno that allows the community to donate meals directly to families in the fight.

Halloween Costume Project 2006

A Halloween Costume project was created so that patients and their siblings would have the chance to make the very important decision of who or what they wanted to be for Halloween! In October 2006, KRM volunteers joined the children for a shopping spree full of costumes and candy at the Party City in North Reno.

2005 "Chipping Away at Childhood Cancer" Memorial Golf Tournament

KRM hosted its first signature golf event, "Chipping Away at Childhood Cancer" Memorial Golf Tournament, in the Reno community at Montreux Golf Country Club in September, 2005. KRM was chosen by Montreux as one of eight charitable tournaments hosted each year at their venue. The development and real estate business community came together for a full field of play and a first class golf event which raised awareness and more than $100,000 in family support funds.
